Sustainable Schools

Today for Tomorrow Logo
Department of Education Logo

The Commissioner worked closely with the Department of Education; school headteachers, educators, contractors and architects to embed sustainability principles in the design and development of the new school buildings in Gibraltar. These principles have been made visible across the schools so that those visiting, working or learning at the schools become aware of the how sustainability has been embedded as a whole-school approach.

Westside and Bayside schools, for example, address the following sustainability principles:

We are a sustainable school Image
We are a Sustainable School...

This is a co-education school. We are committed to providing equal opportunities for all and to developing the pupils’ self-esteem and the social skills that better prepare them for a diverse world where both genders play important social and economic roles.

We are a Sustainable School...

Our school has been designed to ensure equal learning and access opportunities for all. Our commitment to inclusive education means that there is Braile signage on every floor, accessibility ramps and design features that ensure all can participate.

We are a Sustainable School...

Scattered around the school you will find internal and external water foundations and refillable water stations. It is important to drink water regularly to sustain our concentration and keep healthy. Our students are encouraged to bring in their own water bottles to reduce waste.

We are a Sustainable School...

We are committed to a circular economy and all who study, work and visit the school are asked to recycle their waste. We have coloured recycling bins around the school to make it easier to partition our waste and salvage waste material for future use.

We are a Sustainable School...

We promote sustainable transport choices. We encourage visitors, staff and students to walk, cycle, car-share or bus it to school.  The school has bicycle racks scattered around the exterior of the building.

We are a Sustainable School...

We grow food and have our own soil patches and polycarbonate greenhouses to show how we can reduce our food miles and lead healthy lifestyles.

We are a Sustainable School...

The wooden floors, found in sports halls, dance and drama spaces are FSC and Rainforest Alliance Certified. These engineered timber floors have a hardwood veneer providing an environmentally friendly choice.

We are a Sustainable School...

We have sought to green our school by planting trees and shrubs with reduced need of water and high CO2 absorption.

We are a Sustainable School...

We capture rainwater that is used for irrigation of our green areas reducing the carbon footprint of our school.

We are a Sustainable School...

Our school has a Class A energy performance rating for both primary energy efficiency and environmental impact (CO2).  This has been attained thanks to our tight external envelope that incorporates insulation and materials with high thermal mass.

We are a Sustainable School...

We have equipment that is highly energy efficient. We have applied a filter to our procurement processes to ensure we buy with sustainability in mind.

We are a Sustainable School...

Our photovoltaic cells convert light into electricity. This renewable energy, that we generate ourselves, powers lights across the school and reduces our carbon footprint.

We are a Sustainable School...

Our Green Roof provides insulation and reduces energy consumption rates, creates a habitat for wildlife and provides a more aesthetically pleasing landscape.

We are a Sustainable School...

The School has been designed with sustainable principles in mind. We have skylights and louvers that maximise natural light whilst reducing direct sunlight. The overhang shading also keeps our classrooms cool.

These principles have been made visible across the school so that those visiting, working or learning at the school become aware of the how sustainability has been embedded as a whole-school approach.
