Anna Martinez @UNECE meeting in Austria
Gibraltar, represented by Anna Martinez, participated at UN Youth work session which took place from the 16th until Tuesday 18th February at the Federal Ministry Ceremonial Hall of Sustainability in Vienna. The meeting was hosted by the Austrian Ministry of Climate Protection in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
This adhoc youth working group is to contribute to the development of the strategic framework on sustainable development and its actionable work plan, paving the way to 2030. As part of this process, the working group discussed several key issues such as youth engagement and the role of young people in the post-2019 implementation framework. It addressed issues such youth employability and digital literacy as well as health and environmental issues.
The Commissioner for Sustainable Development and Future Generations, Professor Daniella Tilbury, who is also the UK representative for sustainable development at UNECE added: ‘Greta Thunberg has reminded us of the importance of including the youth voice, and that of future generations, in issues surrounding sustainable development. It is vital that we prepare young people so that they can effectively respond to a changing world and can purposefully engage in decisions that affect their future. We are grateful to Anna for having represented us at this important meeting.’
Anna Martinez is currently undertaking a Global Environment and Climate Change Law Master’s at the University of Edinburgh. She is the founder of The Climate Conversation affiliated with the Social Responsibility and Sustainability Team at her University and is also participating in the Clinton Global Initiative University. Anna has experience studying and working abroad in Hong Kong, Washington D.C., Rome and also within Gibraltar’s Department of the Environment and the Environmental team at Hassans International Law Firm. Her passions lie in Climate Change Science and Law, Green Tech, Youth Engagement and Sustainable Development.
